SONGS FOR CHILDREN
Educational Songs and Activities for Kids age 2 to 9

The Bugs and Seeds Workshop occurs as follows:

Suzee burst into the room singing the Hello Song. She suggests they sing a song everybody knows so they all sing Happy and You Know it.

Suzee announces that she loves bugs and sings I Love Bugs
She asks the kids how they can tell the difference between bugs. Suzee repeats that the next time they see a bug they should look at it very carefully and count the legs reinforcing that observation and attention to detail are critical parts of the scientific method. She even says: Observation, looking very carefuly and counting the legs, is the first step in Science Discovery.

The children pretend to be worms and have a race. They determine how many kids they need to have enough legs to pretend to be insects and have a race.

All together they sing Itsy Bitsy Spider.
Suzee sings Wiggle Wiggle Wiggle Worms
Suzee brings out her pet worms and calls their attention to the dampness of the worms.    She explains Worms breathe through their skin so that is why they must keep damp.   Then she tells them to notice the following five anatomical details:
  1. The anterior (for Grade 2 or 3 otherwise just The Front)
  2. The posterior (for Grade 2 or 3 otherwise just The Back)
  3. The rings
  4. The clitellum (For kids in Grade 2 or 3 otherwise The Part with No Rings)
  5. The prostomium (For kids in Grade 2 or 3 otherwise just The Mouth),/li>
The children draw a picture of the worm.

We reiterate that worms make soil and in soil we grow plants that we can eat. The children tell us that plants grow from seeds.

Suzee sings Every Little Seed

We examine dry bean seeds and compare them to bean seeds that have been soaked overnight.
We crack open a seed and examine its internal anatomy.
We pretend we are hard little round seeds and we dance out the growth cycle.
The children tell Suzee what kind of plants they are.

We plant seeds in soil in egg carton containers.

We talk about trees, the products we get from them including the oxygen/carbon dioxide cycle.

We talk about a circle having no beginning and no end.    We form a circle and as we go around in the circle Suzee sings We All Share

The children make anatomically correct insects and spiders out of modelling clay and pipe cleaners.
As they continue working on their insects, Suzee says good bye and sings So Long Song.    The children leave with their insects, their planted seeds and their anatomically correct worm drawings.
