SONGS FOR CHILDREN
Educational Songs and Activities for Kids age 2 to 9

The Outer Space Workshop occurs as follows:

Suzee burst into the room singing the "Hello Song".

The kids partner up. Standing on a large sheet of newprint, they put an X where they are standing and draw their partner's shadow.

Suzee asks the children to describe the night sky.  They sing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" Suzee sings "The Star Song (A Mass of Burning Gas)" The children join in the chorus. We discuss mass. Suzee describes constellations. The children look at drawings of the constellations and Suzee tells them the myths. Each child picks one constellation and sticks stars on the proper spots and draws a picture of the shape. They then find "their" constellation on the skychart.

Suzee asks the children what we call the star nearest to us. We discuss the sun's characteristics.

Suzee sings "Sun Song (So Dear to Us)"   We list the things that the earth gets from the sun.

Suzee lifts up an object and asks the children what would happen if she dropped the object. We discuss electrons, mass and gravity. Suzee sings "Planet Earth". We discuss the difference between stars and planets. We discuss the layers of planet earth and draw a picture of it.

Suzee sings "Day and Night"    She pretends she is the sun.  The children pretend they are planets facing when she yells day and turning away from her when she yells night.   Then The children find an orbit around Suzee and orbit her.    Lastly they rotate and orbit around Suzee.  This generally results in laughter.

We discuss the solar system. The children draw a picture of the Solar System. We talk about the moon. We discuss satellites. We sing "The Satellite Song". We discuss the ways in which people can explore space. Reminding the children about the differences between liquids, solids and gases, we make a bubble powered rocket. Each child returns to their x and we compare their shadows NOW with the shadows they drew an hour ago.

Suzee says goodbye and sings the "So Long Song". The children leave with a constellation, a skychart, a drawing of the layers of the earth, a drawing of the solar system and a rocket that really works!!
